Chess

Matthew has had a dream of playing games with his children since they were born. Boy Howdy is becoming the fulfillment of that dream. This child would play games all day every day if we let him. And he always wants to be learning a new game. Sadly he has learned all the games of his age level we currently own. So he is constantly looking in our cupboards for something new. He has been asking to play chess for the last year, at least.

Matthew finally relented and taught him. I think it kills him a little to have to play on such a rudimentary level, but I am not as well versed in my chess strategy, so Boy Howdy and I function on just about the same level. Boy Howdy was in heaven getting to play his beloved daddy's game with him.
The next day Boy Howdy decided he was proficient enough to be able to teach his sister. This boy isn't always the kindest friend to her, but when he is enthusiastic about anything he loves to share that passion with anyone, but especially with his number one fan Cheeks. Be still my little mother heart.

Family Day at the Beach (Minus Matthew)

We had the wonderful fortune of having two visits from Mother Marler.  She came at the end of our school year for almost a week and then again a month later for another week. The kids absolutely adored having her here. It may have something to do with the many books and games she brought with her (in her magic suitcase that dispensed something new each day) but I guess spoiling comes with the grandma territory. The last day of her vacation, we decided to go to the coast. Our trip amazingly corresponded with my sisters' plans and so we all met up at Depoe Bay and spent a blissful day adventuring on the coast. Thanks go to my mother-in-law for agreeing to share her grandchildren with their cousins for the day.
It was kind of cold, at least for some of us.
